The same few researchers have been driving the push to circumcise all boys everywhere for years. It’s hard to find a pro-circumcision paper that does not have the name of Robert Bailey, Stefan Bailis, Ronald Gray, Daniel Halperin, Godfrey Kigozi, Jeffrey Klausner, Brian Morris, Stephen Moses, Malcolm Potts, Thomas Quinn, Edgar Schoen, Maria Wawer, Helen Weiss, and/or Thomas Wiswell on it. (Halperin has said he’s “destined” to promote it by his descent from a ritual circumciser. Morris has co-authored a paper with the editor of circumcision-fetish website, and thinks infant circumcision should be “mandatory” in Australia. Schoen has written poems in praise of circumcision.)

Of the list above, this "news" was authored by Morris, Bailis and Klausner. Cutting genitals, especially thosse of infants, is an anomalous way of preventing a sexually transmitted disease of adults, and it is the compulsion to do it that should be investigated.

Such a relief to see that huge efforts are being made to fight malaria, especially for children. Let's continue distributing these LLINs to more areas in Africa. Freedom from Hunger has a Malaria campaign to help fight malaria. So please visit http://bit.ly/malaria_day_2011 so we can envision a future without malaria.

Looks like data mining. The words "to assess the protective effect of male circumcision" suggest the researchers had an agenda.

The USAIDS report on what looks like the same data found "There appears to be no clear pattern of association between male circumcision and HIV prevalence. In 8 of 18 countries with data, as expected, HIV prevalence is lower among circumcised men, while in the remaining 10 countries HIV prevalence is higher among circumcised men"

'Torture the data and it will confess to anything,' as they say at Guantanamo Bay.

They always say "reduces by about 60%". They never mention that the whole basis for that claim is 73 circumcised men who didn't get HIV while 63 did, less than two yeara after 5,400 men were circumcised and a similar number left alone. Now they multiply those few men by thoussands to make sweeping claims about circumcision saving the whole of Africa. There are many problems with those studies, beginning with the assumption that all the HIV was sexually transmitted.

"Circumcision may also protect against HIV acquisition in men who have sex with men (MSM) and those who practice unprotected anal intercourse (either exclusively or predominantly), although these data are not consistent." That is just nonsense. Many studies have shown NO protection to MSMs, and those few that have only apply to very high-risk subsets, too small to be statistically significant.

"Longitudinal studies among HIV discordant couples suggest that male circumcision may provide some direct long-term benefit to women, which may start after complete wound healing." On the contrary, the Wawer study (Lancet 374:9685, 229-37) suggested a much greater risk to women, but it was cut short before the effect of wound healing could be eliminated.

The studies, and articles like this promoting them, are all written by the same handful of interconnected researchers, some of whom have indicated vested interests in circumcision.
